10 Newborn Photo Shoot Tips for Parents

We believe there is not a moment more magical than when a baby is born. It’s an honor to be a part of capturing this amazing process and documenting one of the most incredibly special times in your life! Our job in photographing your newborn goes far beyond just snapping a few shots with a camera; we strive to capture a unique moment in time and all the amazing emotions that go along with it. It’s our greatest hope that the photos from your session with become a family treasure.

We’ve put together this post based on our many years of experience photographing newborns. We are sharing some of our “tricks of the trade” to get those beautiful, doll-like images everyone goes absolutely crazy for. We’ve included information on booking and timing, what to wear, how to prepare, how to get your baby ready, and more! Of course, as we get closer to your due date and session, we will reach out with more reminders and tips. You are always welcome to contact us with questions.

#1.  Book your session 2-4 months in advance

As soon as your baby comes, it’s going to be non-stop late nights and hard work (seriously, we’ve been there)!  Coordinating a photo session might seem like the last thing on your list of priorities. This is one reason we recommend booking your session at least 2-4 months in advance of your due date.  It helps to make sure everything is lined up ahead of time and you don’t have to worry or scramble for last-minute plans! Like many studios, we also only book a limited number of newborn sessions per month.  Booking early will ensure you have a session with us.

Book a Session

#2. Best to shoot before 21 days old

We will book your session approximately 5-10 days after your due date. This is a tentative date to keep your session on our books. Once your baby is home safe and sound, please contact us to let us know that they have arrived and if you need to move your appointment. Our full newborn sessions take place on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9 am and 2 pm. It’s important to remember and plan for the fact that newborns are best photographed under 3 weeks of age. We do not limit our newborn sessions to this timeframe though. Our newborn wrapped mini sessions are great for babies up to 8 weeks of age. Our other newborn packages are an option as well, but we cannot guarantee those sweet womb like poses that we are known for.

#3. Prepare the day before

Please do not schedule any vaccinations for your baby the day before your shoot. We want that beautiful baby skin to be smooth and creamy, and sometimes shots can cause a minor skin reaction or leave marks. They can also leave baby not feeling well and unsettled. It’s best for baby to be comfortable and sleepy for their session. Additionally, we recommend playing with your baby as much as possible and keeping them awake more than usual so they will be tired out for photo day, which is what we need to get the best photos!

#4. Getting the creamy perfect skin

We can’t stress enough how important it is to not use tight-fitting diapers, straps or elastic on your baby the day of the shoot. We have seen so many tight-fitting diapers and elastic outfits cause marks on baby’s skin, and it all shows up right there on camera! Therefore, the day for the shoot, avoid anything tight-fitting to make sure your baby’s skin looks natural and beautiful for the photos. We recommend something loose fitting and easy to get off, such as button up pajamas or a side snap onesie. This makes it easier to transition baby without waking them.

#5. Keep baby awake before the session

We highly recommend keeping your baby awake at least 90 minutes before our photo session! This helps baby stay sleepy and calm during the shoot, and increases the probability of getting those adorable, sleeping doll-like images everyone goes crazy for. The longer the baby can stay awake before photos, the better!

#6. Feed and change beforehand
